Good news, pet lovers, now you can expect to live longer with the help of your furry friend. We know all you pet owners need not be reminded of the wonderful health benefits of having to care for your furry friends, but to those who are still tinkering about owning one, or two, here are more reasons why you just need to.
It’s More Than a Just Wonderful Feeling
Having a dog to come home to or a cat to warm you are just some reasons why people enjoy the company of their furry friend. And for the very first time they took their pet to their arms, pet owners do know that their fave animals will play a bigger role in their life than just being a night guard to their home.
Natural uppers. Drinking coffee to feel energized will only produce cortisol, one of the many stress hormones that you need to overcome everyday. If you can’t find anything you cheer you up, have at least 15 minutes to play with your dog or cat to feel instantly energized. But it’s more than the playing that really makes you happy; it is during these precious 15 minutes that the stress hormone, cortisol, is lowered while simultaneously pumping up the happy substance called serotonin. So spend as much time as possible with your pet and see how your mood improves.
BP stabilizer. Exercise and a healthy diet can help you maintain a healthy BP. But if you suddenly forgot your doctor’s advice when you saw that piece of moist, rich chocolate cake, leave the table and cuddle your pet. Studies show that pet owners have lower heart rates and blood pressures as compared to those who didn’t. And the result is all throughout consistent, whether they are tackling a stressful situation or just lounging around. So the next time you feel that you can’t resist the urge to indulge in a fatty feast, go out and take your pet for a walk.
Antidepressant. We all have that once-in-a-lifetime encounter with depression. But whether it was caused by a sudden loss of a loved one or being fired from a post you have kept so long, doctors believe that the effect of petting your fave animal is as good as a calming pill. Pets give their owners unconditional love, allows them to talk for as long as they want, and will lovingly greet them every morning – even if the sun is not in its brightest.
If you are feeling down for some time, taking care of your pet will be as good as talking to your therapist or taking your medication. Play with them, walk with them, and take a nap with them. Caring for your pet allows you to take not worrying about the things that worry you. Do yourself a favor, take some time with your pet and you feel that the time you spent with is a time well spent.
Fitness coach. Have no time to go to the gym? Then hit the road for your dog’s sake. Instead of thinking about your fitness routine, consider the 30-minute walk in the neighborhood as your dog’s daily dose of exercise. Pet owners who maintain a daily fitness routine with their dogs like walking or running are essentially fit and actually less obese than those who aren’t.
Is a 30-minute walk too long for you? Taking two 15-minute walking sessions everyday, one right after you wake up and the other when you’re tempted to dose off in the afternoon, can give your body the dose of instant fitness routine – even when you don’t feel it.
And here’s more good news: For those who want to strengthen their bones, walking your dog can train your bones to take on the challenge of overcoming time’s effects in our body, which include fractures, joint pains, and even osteoporosis. Plus, being outdoors-y gives you plenty of reason to enjoy the sun, not to mention all the vitamin D that you can harvest for free.
But make sure that you take proper safety measures before you go out. First, make sure that your dog is the walking type and that the leash isn’t too long or short for you.
